I have completed a clean install of Windows XP with SP2 and all updates for a customer. After setting up his email I tested the email to ensure that all was working correctly. If I send a new email it sends clean, empties the outbox as it should, no errors. If I forward a received email, as the customer often does, it sends normally, however, the message remains in the outbox, and an error is reported. The error gives no information. No code, no description, just that an error has occurred. I checked all the settings and they are the standard default settings for Outlook Express. Nothing appears to be out of the ordinary. The email incoming and outgoing info is correct. Customer address and password are also correct according to the ISP. What am I missing? Been doing this for nearly 20 years and have not encountered this problem before. Any ideas would be helpful.

regsvr32.exe

can not execute any programs. program icons have a "Word" icon. one excell file has taken the "Word" icon. I started using Knoppix a few years ago because of the novelty of running Linux without installing it. It was nice to use on friends computers so that I wouldn't have to work around their browser and OS settings. As time went by I became aware of some of the tools included with Knoppix. You can either boot Knoppix or Memtest86. Memtest86 is great for diagnosing memory problems or verifying new memory upgrades. QTparted is a great partitioning program. Although Knoppix includes ClamAV, I must admit that I have never been able to scan an NTFS file system with it.

It seems that with all these tools it should be something that many technicians use. I haven't had any experience using some of the network applications included with Knoppix ( nmap, Nessus, etc.. ), but I have used it to verify ISP connections. It also comes in handy if you have any doubts about Linux hardware compatibility. If Knoppix has problems auto-configuring a device it is likely that it will be troublesome if you install Linux.

With all these uses it seems natural for me to include Knoppix as part of my toolkit. I'm sure there are many cons outweighing the pros, especially from a security standpoint. If any has any insight into using Live CD ditros as a diagnostic tool, I would appreciate hearing about it.

                                                            Matt

The Best Anti-Virus Program

What is the best anti-virus program? I have an SMS package and a deployment scheme to uninstall CS2, clean up the files, and then install CS3. That process alone is guaranteed to be at least 2 hours. After that, I still have to launch an Adobe product and request the updates, which tacks on an additional hour or two, depending on the speed of the machine. All in all, to go from a machine with CS2 to the latest version of CS3 takes 3-5 hours depending on what machine it's going onto.

We all know that Microsoft and Apple both allow you to "slipstream" their service packs, patches and updates for their various products directly into your installer files, thereby speeding up large scale deployments immensly. Does anybody know if this is even possible with Adobe products? The adobe forums haven't been helpful in the least. With at least 3 hours needed to deploy (largely unattended but still 3 hours, and I have to interact with the installation process at least three times) per machine, multiplied by 300 machines....well, you can see why shaving off even an hour per machine will be very helpful.

Thoughts?

Justin Martin
MCSA, CCNP, Network+, Security+

PC to HDTV Streaming Video Problems

My father has given me the job of hooking his new HDTV 50inch Magnovox up to his computer. The job seemed simple enough, but the main reason for his use of this was to watch streaming video from the internet on the TV.
He has a subscription with Netflix, and if you know netflix they have a grand collection of Instant Videos to stream right from the internet when ever you want.
I used a DVI to HDMI 15ft wire, with an HDCP compatible video card (GForce6200). I use the cloning option in Nvidia's Control Panel. Everything works great, but there is one problem, when we try to watch streaming videos from Netflix, we must use IE v6 or higher. Everything but the actual video shows. The actual video just comes up black. But however the video on the computer's screen works perfect.
I suspect a codec is needed to allow the HDTV to show this video format, but i am afraid it might be impossible simply due to the HDTV's capabilities.
Please if anyone knows of the codecs or the solution to this problem plz help.

MS Access 2003 Forms.

Hey guys,
I want to disable some record navigation buttons at the bottom of the form. One morning, I powered it up, but it would start crashing on Windows bootup. I tried Safe Mode, but it would still crash. I noticed that the file it crashes on is this:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\agp440.sys

The "agp" in the filename in the "DRIVERS" directory would suggest a video driver failure.

Can anybody help me with troubleshooting? If I need to reinstall the driver, how can I do it using the command prompt (since that's all I can get to)? The installation file comes as *.exe file and would not install without booting into the Windows GUI (which, as you can tell, not an option at this point). I don't have all the personal files backed up, so I'm trying to use an option that wouldn't require me to perform a clean Windows reinstall.

Any input would be greatly appreciated:D.

Patch Management Strategies

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> OK everyone – let’s use this new great forum format and get some discussion going. One of my primary jobs in my position is security patch management for an enterprise of around 11,000 desktops and servers. The topic of patch management is one that has always been the subject of many debates ad discussions.

Whether you take care of a large enterprise, a small company, do consulting and make recommendations to many companies, or are just provide advice for you family and friends, you probably have a way you like to do things. Particularly, there are a few schools of thought around patch management. So which of the below strikes you, and why?

Apply the patches right away: This school of thought says that the patches have gotten pretty good lately, and the risk of a patch actually breaking a lot of machines is far outweighed by the risk of leaving all of the machines vulnerable.

Test the patches, then apply them: IT staffs who espouse this method do so either because 1) They feel that the risk of breaking machines with a patch is higher than the risk of allowing extra time to test, or 2) They are operating under a federal or other regulation that says that patches MUST be tested first.

Wait and see: Some IT staffs prefer to keep an "ear to the pavement," so to speak, and see if any buzz is generated on the patch management list servs, such as patchmanagement.org. If no problems are reported in a few days after the patch release, they must be good, and will then be deployed. In other words, they let others do their testing, and deploy if no bugs are reported.

So which method do you use and why? I will reveal my secrets in a few weeks after you all have had a chance to chime in with your thoughts.

Good Linux Distributions

Hello,

I recently put together a new system. I also have HP Photosmart Premier, and Picassa 2, but niether of them will let me point to an area of an image and learn the coordinates so that I can create an image map using XHTML. Am I missing something, or should I download new software? Keep in mind, my budget is tight. Any suggestions appreciated. But again - it is not a baselining tool. Run it and look at the XML file it generates. It gives you dates and times of when events happened. May or may not be useful as a baseline utlity. If a computer is acting weird, you run it and it tells you when software was installed, drivers changed, registry settings changed, etc.

It is alo not a security tool.
