For those of you trying to get an idea of how to prepare for Security+ I used the Sybex book only. I got 852/900. Excellent book and easy to follow.

Another recommendation if you can't get your hands on the Sybex is the All-In-One Security+.

Hey all,

I take my NET+ exam Friday, I have been studying for a few months and thought I was ready until the last couple of days. I'm thinking that I may just be having last minute jitters but really can't afford to fail this exam.

Can ya'll please tell me what I need to make sure I have memorized before I go into my test Friday morning?

It's alot of pressure having everyone at your work know your going to take this exam. Everyone is saying i'll pass but I still know I have sooo much to learn

Looking to certify

Hi Folks. Decided to join the other day as I plan to get a few certifications under my belt over the next few months. Let me start with a little background info. I have been employed in the computer hardware support business since 1977. I have maintained enterprize level servers and peripherals for most of my career. The last four years of my career have been spent supporting Wintel servers and workstations. I have a working knowledge of 2000 workstation, XP, Vista, Office, 2000 and 2003 server, Exchange and SQL Server and Active Directory. At this time, I would like to get the A+ (IT Pro), Server + and Net+. I don't think I will have too much difficulty with these, but will be looking at some learning materials just the same. I don't consider the money spent per exam as a paltry sum and would like to pass on the first shake if at all possible.

I am a little confused as to what material is consider most current though. It appears that the exams are changed every so often and I would be most interested in obtaining the latest and greatest. Thank you.

Hi,

Lately when I go to a conference or meeting and talk with my colleagues, I get the "what are you doing now?" and always have an answer. But when I ask them about their next certification, many reply "I have really rethink the value of vendor certification." Since the dot com heyday and bust, I have not seen much research (and I may be ignorant of) about whether vendor (and generic) certifications still are holding their value, gaining, or slipping. I would like to put a paper together on current thoughts and any insight would be appreciated. THANKS! /Roy

Nowadays CompTIA is researching to launch a new Vender Natural certification called "CompTIA System Administrator" certificate. Requirements for this certificate are; passing 4 comptia exams with A+, Network+, Security+ and Server+. I think this is a good idea. What do you think, guys?

I just recently signed up for the IT Pro. I just passed my CompTIA A+ Essentials (220-601) and CompTIA A+ IT Techinician (220-602) exams.

Just wanted to know how u guys prepared for the exam, and what was your score.

Failed Security+ by two-three questions, need some answers

I took my exam on September 17. I used the Cram Examforce preperation tool for the 2007 edition of the exam. Some of the information I found elusive was on the following topics:

-Use of E-mail proxy, E-mail servers, and configuring of security
-Port and protocols used for Kerberos transmission security
-more information on anomoly vs. signature detection systems
-differences between host and network active and passive detection systems

By the way, I got 750/900 and needed 764.

I'm planning to take the A+ Essentials and the 220-602 exam. I prepared using materials for A+ 2006. However, when scheduling the exam I noticed it was registered as A+ 2007. Has the exam been changed significantly from A+ 2006 to A+ 2007? If so, what has changed? Has Windows Vista material been added?

Validity and Acceptance of Security+ Certification

One question I see a lot is about the validity and acceptance of various certifications. Security + certification has been accredited by the Department of Defense (DoD) in DoD Directive 8570, which is the "Information Assurance Workforce Improvement Program." The latest release of this directive incorporates Change 1, dated May 18, 2008.

The purpose of this manual is to:

"...provides guidance and procedures for the training, certification, and management of the DoD workforce conducting Information Assurance (IA) functions in assigned duty positions. It also provides information and guidance on reporting metrics..."

Security+ is listed in Table AP3.T1 (Appendix 3, page 92) as a DoD Baseline Certification for IAM Level I, and IAT Level II.

A+ Clarification

Hey, I know there are a few other A+ cert threads already, but this is asking a different kind of question.

I see the 4 exams on the site now (the 2006 ones), The "Essentials", and the "202-602, 603, and 604."

As someone without their A+ certification yet, I was wondering how many you needed to get your certification. Is it the essentials plus one elective? Or do you need all 4.

Also: Is one of the 3 electives more prestigious than another? Do you get more than one title if you take all the exams (if you are [i]allowed[/i] to take other A+ elective exams that is).

Yeah, think that's about it, any clarification would be nice, thanks in advance :)

CDIA+ Certification Value? Industry Specific??

Hi Everyone,

Two year member/reader, first time poster to this board. I noticed no information, threads or feedback on the CDIA+ certification. I come from the IT world (Helpdesk/Network Admin/Change-Management) and I am currently employed as a Consultant for an Imaging company (MFR of copiers/printers/MFDs + software). As a part of my role, I was required by my employer to attain the CDIA+ certification. I passed the exam today without any issues (870). I was just wondering if this certification has any actual validity or carries any weight outside of the imaging industry? I don't see job postings for EDMS managers, administrators or PM's with this designation as a "must have" or "nice to have".

I am quite familiar with having large value add certifications as I am A+, Network+, Security+, ITIL and MCP certified but I am seeking some feedback on this externally.

MCDST Suggestions?

I have almost no networking experience... I think they assume 9 months experience before taking the test? (could that be why I failed)?

Also, my study "source" was not very good.... I tried something free from the local library and safari tech books online... when I got to the test site, after about 30 questions I realized "this is not what I've been studying...". I was clueless for the most part at the PC on test day.

Now, I'm armed with exam cram 2 network+ book... covers the 2005 exams (which I hope is current?)...

can anyone verify this? Also, have you used this book? Did you like it?

Hi,

I'm trying to decide what to buy to help me prepare for the Security+ exam. I've used Transcender to try and prepare for the exam when I took it in May 2007 which I did not pass, which made me a little ticked. Also, I've heard that they are redoing the exam like they did for A+ and Network+. Has this gone into effect yet? Are the questions differenct between the Transcender Security+ and the Self Test Software Security+ tesp prep software since they are both owned by Kaplan IT? Also, if you purchased Transcender, don't you get lifetime updates? I've seen where some have used the "Mastering Network Security" book to help prepare. Being that this was printed in 2002, is it still helpfull in 2008?

Hello everyone,

I am pretty new to the certification world, but not to new to the IT field. I've been taking computer courses since high school, and work in the IT field for the Army. During my last year of high school, I was required to take the OCP exam for Oracle 9i, which I found to be an extremely hard test, and have been nervous to take more certifications. Just recently in February I took my Network+ and passed it. Now I was wondering If its recommended to go for the Security+ or A+. I am currently a Help Desk Technician, but want to focus on the security side of network administration. I’m sure that taking the time to learn a little extra about what makes up the network wouldn’t be a bad idea. I was just curious on is what path is most commonly taken to reach the end goal. Has anyone taken any Microsoft exams, or is it better to stay vendor natural for the most part?

Well, I scheduled my Network+ test, for March 8th and I am almost done reading the all-in-one study guide taking practice tests, and have been done with my Networking classes in school. I feel pretty confident that I will pass but any suggestions that anyone has to this test? I already have my A+IT Tech cert. Also I was thinking about going for either Security+ or Linux+ after I pass my net+ exam. I am trying to gear myself more toward the network security field in general which one(s) may be greater than the other, in the begining stages of my cert proccess. I just wanted to make sure of the terms of use with Certification Vouchers. When you purchase a PearsonVUE or Prometric voucher, that has an expiration date of June 30, 2008, that means you are able to schedule an exam at any time as many times, as long as it is before the expiration date? correct? Or is there fees every time you reattempt it, either to pass or to get a better score.

Net+ 2007 Edition???

So I studied off the Sybex Net+ 2005 edition books. No prob. When I go to register for the test it says 2007 edition ??? Looked it up online and the site says nothing about a 2007 edition. OK, I Google it, people on the forums are saying that the questions are re-worded for "today's technology" (Not sure what that meant). Took the test and had some questions that I have never even seen before. Is there an updated study guide out there ? I know that I am extremely weak on my protocols but I only missed it by 10 points and I felt some that some of the questions were out there for a vendor neutral test..
Just my own opinion. Does any one have a good recommendation on a reasonable priced test engine with these "today's technology " type questions ? I could put down the questions I didn't get but I think that would violate something ??????

I'm currently studying for my A+ Essentials and plan on taking 602 and 603 seeing how only 2 are needed to pass to get certification.

Its very basic, and i fly threw it, Acronyms, odd details and a few unknown surprises, really just helped fine tune myself for the Essentials Exam. Ive never taken the exam before, and hope to pass my first attempt. I feel confident, but suspicious i might be missing some good advice, before i take the exam, i also want to get my 25$ worth by using this forum! lol, I'm curious how hard the essentials exam is maybe from others perceptive and wonder if the exams I've chosen work together in a unified way.

After i pass my A+ Essentials; 602; 604 exams i plan on further studying
the CompTIA Securty+ and CEA-CompTIA DHTI+.

If anyone has any "All in One" Books of favorite for study prep for Security+ and/or DHTI+, plz post

HTI Certifications

Through a course provided by my community college district, I'm now TIA/EIA certified to teach HTI (Graymark/Leviton, Cert # CHI-1227), but, I haven't taken a basic course in the subject matter for myself.

Should I shoot for HTI+ or DHTI+? What are the differences? Does one follow the other, or supersede the other? Help?

Security+ Prep

Hey guys,

What tools do you recomend using for the final prep of questions for the Security+ Cert?

Right now I am using Security+ In Depth. The questions seem easy so far. Is that just me and my background or is it the book. For my MCP test I used the Microsoft Press book and the questions that came with it along with Transcenders. After the test I felt like the Transcenders wasnt quite on point with the test. But I think that for tests that are more fact driven versus how-to driven it would be a great pratice test.

Let me know what pratice tests you guys have used and how they faired please.

I'm planning to take the Project+ exam in the next few weeks. Most of the other CompTIA exams state both the minimum passing score and the scale on the 'At A Glance' pages for each certification overview. For example:

CompTIA A+ 220-601: Passing Score: 675 on a scale of 100-900
CompTIA A+ 220-602: Passing Score: 700 on a scale of 100-900
CompTIA A+ 220-603: Passing Score: 700 on a scale of 100-900
CompTIA A+ 220-604: Passing Score: 700 on a scale of 100-900
CompTIA Network+ Passing Score: 554 on a scale of 100-900
CompTIA Server+ Passing Score: 615 on a scale of 100-900
CompTIA Security+ Passing Score: 764 on a scale of 100-900
CompTIA Linux+ Passing Score: 675 on a scale of 100-900
CompTIA RFID+ Passing Score: 630 on a scale of 100-900

However, the Project+ page only lists the minimum passing score (stated as 499) and I can't seem to find any information on the scale/total mark etc.

I've taken and obtained certification in A+, Network+, and Server+, and I found the scale useful as a guide to know if I was prepared for the exam. So it would be useful if I knew what it was for the Project+ exam.

Has anyone taken and/or know if scale for the Project+ exam is the same as the other CompTIA exams?
