Retrieving Data From a Hard Drive

I have a staff member's PC which will not boot into Windows XP Home. The PC is not part of the business network, it is a home PC. The staff member already attempted to utilize the system recovery tool, but, no success. It begins to reload Windows but freezes on the configuration of the network point (over and over again). I have attempted to load Fedora on the PC (using a Live CD / the PC does not r/w DVD), but it freezes at the login screen. I just want to retrieve the data from the hard drive before wiping the hard drive altogether. Any suggestions?

I have a desk top computer that i was reinstalling the OS on. I had updated and installed all the drivers on it. A day later i turned it on to make sure everything was running i ran into another problem. When i turn it on it beeps during post. the computer runs but nothing shows up on the monitor. i check the monitor and the connections and they seem fine. I'm thinking the on board graphics is no good. I'm thinking that i am having to buy a graphic card for the desktop. Am i going in the right direction?

help with SATA hard drive

I have a laptop that i am working on that uses a SATA 1.5 hard drive. Can you buy a SATA II hard drive and use it to replace a SATA 1.5 technology. Are the SATA II hard drives backward compatable.

I am struck hard by a virus which mcafee bootable disk catches it as rontokbro virus. I scanned my windows 2000 server 4 times and deleting it but it keeps on coming up. It takes most of the space as it duplicate each folder with an executable file with the same name as the folders. It has already affected 95 % of my LAN computers now.

If anyone has a solution of how curb this virus destruction completely I will be very happy as this virus will finally make me to be kicked out of my job as Senior Technical Officer in IT.

Hi every one,

I have been assigned to install a web server within the network of my work place. My supervisor provided 1 PC and asked me to add that role. The way I used to install a web server is different. I used to have 3 PCs:

1. SRV-1: is the DNS and RRAS

2. SRV-11: is the web server

3. Client-1: is he users computer

The network card configuration for the 3 PCs is as follows:

SRV-1 (DNS and RRAS)

NIC-1 properties:

Wireless Internet Setup

Hi everyone,

I have two PCs in my house, one in the bedroom and the other in the livingroom. I am trying to setup a wireless internet connection between the two PCs (all desktop). For that I have a wireless router from NetGear, and a wireless network adapter fromTP-Link(TL-WN650G). I did setup the router on the bedroom PC, then I installed the adapter on the livingroom PC. Did all the configuration. On the livingroom PC I am able to see the wireless and connect to it, but I can't connect to Internet from that PC. I was wondering if I did miss a configuration some where. I am asking for help if someone know what is going on please give me a hand. Th ank you very much.

Switches

We've recently purchased a Procurve 2810 Managed switch. We do not need the full capacity of a managed switch now but may get there in the future. If I install the switch and cables, can we run on the default settings or will I have to do a minimal configuration? I believe it says it will auto-detect the IP address. I would like to install the switch to take advantage of the gigabit speed but nothing more at this time. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Dead Laptop

One of our customers brought us a dead laptop. It is a Compaq Armada M700 with Winows 98, and HP no longer supports it. The laptop will not boot up with either AC or battery power, and the customer wants us to transfer files from it to a new laptop. He brought the new laptop to us also.

We pulled the harddrive from his old laptop. It is an IBM Travelstar, model # DJSA-210, 10GB ATA/IDE 40pins (2 rows of 20pins.)

Does anybody know where I can get an adapter so I can hook this harddrive up to the new laptop and transfer the files? I've got more info on the harddrive if you need it. Thanks to anybody that can help!

You see, my prob is that I want to use either web server and the application should work in both en and fr. So what is the solution for this problem?

Here's an example for Juniper equipment:

I would think that whatever you have in place to monitor the interface on your router that is receiving input from the CSU/DSU that actually connects to the smart-jack that connects to the T1. Like your CiscoWorks server (or whatever equipment you are using) or something?

You could use something like WebNM to monitor your router uptime - I would think it would have a way to monitor the specifics of each interface on the router as well.

Ethereal is a good one that I have tried a bit and think offers the functionality you're after. It is basically a packet sniffer or network analyzer. It is also free for download at www.ethereal.com.

I found the following on there website regarding capturing E1/T1/J1, etc.,

Not sure if Ethereal/wireshark will give him what he is after. A packet sniffer will show what traffic is passing through the interface, but I thought he was looking for up-time statistics, etc.

Well I still get the Ethereal.com site showing up as ethereal software but what I noticed is that what these two have in common is PCAP, WinPCAP, AirPCAP. Eitherway, you are right in that a Packet Sniffer does not usually give the functionality Matthew is after but there are add-ins for Ethereal (at least that is what my skimming through the FAQs seemingly turned up)that I believe can give the software that functionality.

If I remember correctly CISCO's IOS on at least its more robust routers (like a Frame Relay 2500 series router I supported for about a year back in 2001) contained up time statistics through one of its menu items. It would be nice if we knew Matthew's Router Brand and Model. Thanks William.

Yeah - I noticed that Ethereal site still up also. I am not sure why. Older versions of Wireshark have a security vulnerability, so I can only assume that any versions older than that - which were still named Ethereal - had that same security vulnerability and should be replaced by the latest version of wireshark.

The WinPCAP is the packet capture driver that the sniffer needs to put the NIC in promiscuous mode. The AirPCAP is the packet capture driver that allows you to sniff wireless stuff. That combined with a special hardware adapter lets you sniff multiple wireless channels at the same time. Laura Chappell demonstrated it at TechEd last month. That setup to sniff wireless is a little expensive though - thus the reason I haven't installed it yet. Laura is the founder, by the way, of Wireshark's co-existing site: http://wiresharku.com

Hello Everyone,

Today I ran into abit of an odd problem...

I have an intra net set up with each user having a word doc saved as *.htm. On these pages I have links to sites, folders, and or files. Today a user reported that they could not reach any of the folders.

Any user logged onto the workstation can open links and individula files, but is unable to open links to the folders. However if the same user logs ont another workstation and accesses the page they can open everything.

On the workstation in question if you move the cusor over the folder it turns to the finger but clicking bears no results.

Did a full virus scan, spy wear, and ad wear, dropped it from the domain and reentered no change.

Any ideas?

Anti Malware what is better for a Company

Hi @ all,

i very happy and proud to make my 1st post on this site. :)

The question is what Anti-Malware solution is the best to have on a network.

Ive tested Blink Pro. this Software is nice to manage but it requests too much recources. The Sandbox is like Norman Anti-Virus ;)

Then I have tested Agnitum Outpost Suite Pro. The Firewall part is OK but Anti Malware is not that ok to many false posetives.

I have tested Bullguard that use to have the Kaspersky Engine. For Corporate use not ok since it has the Online Server check.

Symantec is ok but its too much VirusSignature related.

McAfee lol i realy dont like that one toooooo many false posetives.

Panda is too much of a recource hog.

So what type of Anti Malware is realy good to work with. :)

It has to be good to manage, take allmost no recources and an ok price.

Configuring a Linksys WRE54G Wireless Range Expander

Background:

The Linksys WRE54G Wireless Range Expander has acquired a notorious reputation for being extremely hard to configure. The wizard that comes with it on the CD has been noted over and over again in various Internet posts as being useless and not working, often giving errors that it either cannot find the range expander device, or cannot associate with an access point.

I wanted to document this procedure so that others who have run into issues with this device will have another solution to try to get it to work. This procedure involves a variation on the procedure listed at the above link, and not using the wizard on the CD at all, but rather configuring it through the web interface only.

Doing the following, I was able to make it work:

1) If wireless security such as WEP or WPA is being used, disable wireless security WEP or WPA on the wireless router or wireless access point.

2) Reconnect your wireless PC or laptop to the wireless network.

3) Plug the WRE54G into a wall outlet.

4) Use a paperclip or other small device and hit the reset button for 5 seconds.

5) Unplug the WRE54G for 30 seconds.

6) Plug the WRE54G back in and hit the “Auto configuration” button for 5 seconds.

7) Wait for the WRE54G to reboot, and observe that the link light turns from red to blue.

8) Go back into the wireless router or access point, and turn wireless security back on (if using encryption), ensuring that the same key as previously used is re configured.

9) Open a web browser, and navigate to 192.168.1.240

10) Enter the default password of “admin” (no quotes)

11) Verify that the network settings are all correct, including SSD and security settings (security settings should catch up to the WRE54G as soon as you enable it on the router/access point.

12) Change the default password to something more secure.

13) Save all settings.

14) Unplug WRE54G and place in the desired location.

15) Verify that all computers using the range expander can connect to the network and work properly.
